「うん」

「大変たいへん大おおきな頭あたまですね。学問がくもんは出来できますか」

「頭の割わりには出来ないがね、時々ときどき妙みょうな質問しつもんをするよ。こないだコロンバスを訳やくして下くださいって大おおいに弱よわった」

「全まったく頭が大おおき過すぎますからそんな余計よけいな質問をするんでしょう。先生何なんとおっしゃいました」

「ええ？　なあに好いい加減かげんな事ことを云いって訳してやった」

「それでも訳す事は訳したんですか、こりゃえらい」

「小供こどもは何でも訳してやらないと信用しんようせんからね」

「先生もなかなか政治家せいじかになりましたね。しかし今いまの様子ようすでは、何だか非常ひじょうに元気げんきがなくって、先生を困こまらせるようには見みえないじゃありませんか」

「今日きょうは少すこし弱ってるんだよ。馬鹿ばかな奴やつだよ」

「どうしたんです。何だかちょっと見たばかりで非常に可哀想かわいそうになりました。全体ぜんたいどうしたんです」

「なに愚ぐな事さ。金田かねだの娘むすめに艶書えんしょを送おくったんだ」

「え？　あの大頭おおあたまがですか。近頃ちかごろの書生しょせいはなかなかえらいもんですね。どうも驚おどろいた」

「君きみも心配しんぱいだろうが……」

「何なにちっとも心配じゃありません。かえって面白おもしろいです。いくら、艶書が降ふり込こんだって大丈夫だいじょうぶです」

「そう君が安心あんしんしていれば構かまわないが……」

「構わんですとも私わたしはいっこう構いません。しかしあの大頭が艶書をかいたと云うには、少し驚ろきますね」

「それがさ。冗談じょうだんにしたんだよ。あの娘がハイカラで生意気なまいきだから、からかってやろうって、三人さんにんが共同きょうどうして……」

Rough translation

"Was that one of your students?"

"It was."

"He sure has a large noggin. How are his grades?"

"Not as impressive as that noggin might suggest. And he gives me fits. The other day he asked for a translation of 'Columbus,' putting me on the spot."

"with an oversized noggin like that, extranneous iquiries are matter of course. How'd you respond?"

"I hemmed and hawed a bit, then fudged up a translation."

"You managed a translation then? I'm impressed."

"I had to. These young fellows would never be satisfied with anything less."

"You're more the diplomat than you used to be. To be honest, though, he seemed a bit down. Hardly looked the troublemaker."

"He's out of sorts just now. His own idiocy's caught up to him for once."

"What happened? He looked rather wretched. What did he do?"

"Something utterly stupid. He sent a love letter to the Kaneda daughter."

"You don't say! That big noggin did that? Boarding students of old were never so bold. I'm impressed."

"I hate to give you cause for concern, but ..."

"No concern on my part. I find it rather charming. They can shower her with adoration for all I care."

"If you're not upset then maybe I'll let it pass ..."

"I'm not upset. Not in the least. I am surprised, though. That big noggin penned a love letter?"

"To tell the truth, it was done in jest. She flaunts her style. Seeing her as imperinent, they thought to bring her down a notch. There were three involved ..."
