「雪江さん何の何の what sort of; what form of御話し、わたし御話しが大好き大好き fond of; loving」と云った云った said; repliedのはとん子とん子 Tonko (name)で「やっぱりかちかち山かちかち山 Kachi-kachi Mountain (Japanese folktale involving a fiendish tanuki)の御話し？」と聞いたのはすん子すん子 Sunko (name)である。「坊ば坊ば lil gal (nickname for the youngest daughter)も御はなち」と云い出した云い出した spoke up; came in with三女三女 third daughterは姉と姉の間間 space betweenから膝膝 kneesを前前 front; forwardの方に出す。ただしこれは御話を承わる承わる be told; hearと云うのではない、坊ばもまた御話を仕る仕る provide; performと云う意味意味 meaningである。「あら、また坊ばちゃんの話だ」と姉さんが笑う笑う laughと、妻君は「坊ばはあとでなさい。雪江さんの御話がすんでから」と賺かして見る賺かして見る (work to) coax; cajole。坊ばはなかなか聞きそうにない。「いやーよ、ばぶ」と大きな声を出す。「おお、よしよし坊ばちゃんからなさい。何と云うの？」と雪江さんは謙遜した謙遜した deferred; acquiesced。
「そう、よく知ってる知ってる know; be versed in事事 situation; state」
「御前御前 youがくうと邪魔になる邪魔になる get in the way; be a hindrance (= 邪魔になる)」
「あら、くうとじゃないわ、くるとだわね」ととん子とん子 Tonko (name)が口を出す口を出す interject。坊ば坊ば lil gal (nickname for the youngest daughter)は相変らず相変らず as ever; as always「ばぶ」と一喝して一喝して rebuke loudly; object gruffly直ちに直ちに at once; immediately姉姉 older sisterを辟易させる辟易させる force to back down; put (someone) in their place。しかし中途で中途で in the middle口を出されたものだから、続き続き continuation; remainderを忘れて忘れて forgetしまって、あとが出て来ない出て来ない not emerge; not be forthcoming。「坊ばちゃん、それぎりなの？」と雪江雪江 Yukie (name)さんが聞く聞く ask; enquire。
「ホホホホ、いやだ事、誰誰 whoにそんな事を、教わった教わった was taught; learnedの？」
「御三御三 Otan (= Osan, the maidservant)に」
「わるい御三御三 Osan (the maidservant)ね、そんな事を教えて教えて teach」と妻君妻君 the wifeは苦笑苦笑 strained laughをしていたが「さあ今度今度 this time; nextは雪江さんの番番 turn (at something)だ。坊やはおとなしく聞いているのですよ」と云う云う say; tell; instructと、さすがの暴君暴君 tyrant; despotも納得した納得した accepted; agreedと見えて見えて seem、それぎり当分の間当分の間 for some time; for a whileは沈黙した沈黙した fell silent。
「八木八木 Yagi (name)先生先生 teacher; professor; scholarの演説演説 speech; addressはこんなのよ」と雪江さんがとうとう口を切った口を切った started in (talking)。「昔昔 in former times; long agoある辻辻 intersection; crossroadの真中真中 dead center; middleに大きな大きな large; grand石地蔵石地蔵 stone statue of Jizō (bodhisattva who watches over travelers)があったんですってね。ところがそこがあいにく馬馬 horsesや車車 cartsが通る通る pass through大変大変 very much; a great deal賑やかな賑やかな busy; bustling; thriving場所場所 place; area; localeだもんだから邪魔になって仕様がない仕様がない unbearable; intolerableんでね、町内町内 neighborhood; townのものが大勢大勢 in great numbers寄って寄って come together、相談相談 consultation; discussionをして、どうしてこの石地蔵を隅隅 cornerの方方 direction; sideへ片づけたら片づけたら take care of; deal withよかろうって考えた考えた thought; reasonedんですって」
「どうですか、そんな事は何とも何とも (no)thingおっしゃらなくってよ。――でみんながいろいろ相談をしたら、その町内で一番一番 first and foremost; most of all強い強い strong; brawny; rugged男男 man; fellowが、そりゃ訳はありません訳はありません simple enough; easy、わたしがきっと片づけて見せますって、一人で一人で by oneself; aloneその辻へ行って行って go (to)、両肌を抜いで両肌を抜いで stripping to the waist汗汗 sweatを流して流して let flow; let pour off引っ張った引っ張った pulledけれども、どうしても動かない動かない not move; not budgeんですって」
「よっぽど重い重い heavy石地蔵石地蔵 stone statue of Jizō (bodhisattva who watches over travelers)なのね」
「ええ、それでその男男 man; fellowが疲れて疲れて get tired; be worn outしまって、うちへ帰って帰って return (home)寝て寝て sleep; restしまったから、町内町内 neighborhood; townのものはまた相談相談 consultation; discussionをしたんですね。すると今度今度 this time; nextは町内で一番一番 first and foremost; most of all利口な利口な clever; bright; resourceful男が、私私 I; meに任せて任せて entrust (to)御覧なさい御覧なさい try ...、一番一番 as an experiment; by way of trialやって見ますやって見ます try doingからって、重箱重箱 jūbako; multi-tiered food boxのなかへ牡丹餅牡丹餅 botamochi; adzuki bean-covered mochiを一杯一杯 full; filled; brimming with入れて入れて put into、地蔵の前前 front ofへ来て来て come (to)、『ここまでおいで』と云いながら云いながら saying牡丹餅を見せびらかしたんだって、地蔵だって食意地が張ってる食意地が張ってる be gluttonous; be voracious; eat greedilyから牡丹餅で釣れる釣れる can entice; can lure; can temptだろうと思ったら思ったら think; figure、少しも少しも (not) in the least動かない動かない not move; not budgeんだって。利口な男はこれではいけないと思ってね。今度は瓢箪瓢箪 bottle gourdへお酒お酒 saké; rice wineを入れて、その瓢箪を片手片手 one handへぶら下げてぶら下げて hang; suspend (from)、片手へ猪口猪口 small saké cupを持って持って hold; carryまた地蔵さんの前へ来て、さあ飲みたくはないかね飲みたくはないかね wouldn't (you) like a drink、飲みたければここまでおいでと三時間三時間 three hoursばかり、からかって見たがやはり動かないんですって」
「雪江雪江 Yukie (name)さん、地蔵様地蔵様 Jizō-sama (bodhisattva who watches over travelers)は御腹が減らないの御腹が減らないの isn't (he) hungry」ととん子とん子 Tonko (name)がきくと「牡丹餅が食べたいな」とすん子すん子 Sunko (name)が云った。
「利口な人人 person; man; individualは二度共二度共 both timesしくじったしくじった failed; struck outから、その次その次 after that; nextには贋札贋札 counterfeit paper money; forged bank notesを沢山沢山 very much; a great manyこしらえて、さあ欲しい欲しい want; desire; needだろう、欲しければ取りにおいで取りにおいで come and getと札を出したり引っ込ましたりした出したり引っ込ましたりした pushed forward and pulled back; presented and withdrewがこれもまるで益に立たない益に立たない serve no purpose; have no effect; be all in vainんですって。よっぽど頑固な頑固な stubborn; obstinate; hard-headed地蔵様なのよ」
「そうね。すこし叔父さん叔父さん uncleに似ている似ている is like; is similar toわ」
「ええまるで叔父さんよ、しまいに利口な人も愛想をつかして愛想をつかして lose patience with; get fed up withやめてしまったんですとさ。それでそのあとからね、大きな大きな big; grand; outsized法螺法螺 boasting; bragging; blusterを吹く吹く spout; trumpet人が出て出て appear; emerge、私ならきっと片づけて片づけて take care of; deal with見せますからご安心なさいご安心なさい don't worry; rest assuredとさも容易い容易い easy; simple事事 act; actionのように受合った受合った took on; promised (to do)そうです」
「それが面白い面白い interesting; intriguingのよ。最初最初 at first; to startにはね巡査巡査 police officer; policemanの服服 clothing; outfitをきて、付け髯付け髯 false whiskers; glue-on mustacheをして、地蔵様地蔵様 Jizō-sama (bodhisattva who watches over travelers)の前前 before; in front ofへきて、こらこら、動かん動かん not moveとその方その方 youのためにならんぞ、警察警察 policeで棄てておかん棄てておかん won't let pass; can't turn a blind eye toぞと威張って見せた威張って見せた put on a show for; strutted in front ofんですとさ。今今 now; the presentの世世 worldに警察の仮声仮声 impersonated voiceなんか使ったって使ったって (even if one) uses; applies誰も誰も (no) one聞きゃしない聞きゃしない not listenわね」
「本当本当 right; correctね、それで地蔵様は動いたの？」
「動くもんですか、叔父さん叔父さん uncleですもの」
「でも叔父さんは警察には大変大変 very much; a great deal恐れ入って恐れ入って stand in awe of; be humble beforeいるのよ」

「それでも取り合わない取り合わない pay no attention; take no noticeんですとさ。地蔵様の方方 side; one's partも随分随分 very much; a great deal強情強情 obstinate; stubborn; headstrongね」
「それから、どうして？」ととん子とん子 Tonko (name)が熱心に熱心に eagerly; in earnest聞く聞く ask; enquire。

「雪江雪江 Yukie (name)さん飄然て、馬鹿竹のお友達お友達 friend; pal？」ととん子とん子 Tonko (name)が肝心な肝心な important; crucialところで奇問奇問 odd question; curious questionを放った放った let loose with; fired offので、細君細君 the wifeと雪江さんはどっと笑い出した笑い出した broke into laughter。
「いいえお友達じゃないのよ」

「ええ、まあそうよ。――それで馬鹿竹が地蔵様の前へ来て懐手懐手 with one's hands in one's pocketsをして、地蔵様、町内のものが、あなたに動いてくれと云うから動いてやんなさいと云ったら、地蔵様はたちまちそうか、そんなら早く早く quickly; promptly; without delayそう云えばいいのに、とのこのこのこのこ without fanfare; easily動き出した動き出した set to movingそうです」
